I had never been interested in kids before, but one day I woke up and suddenly wanted to take care of kids.
I applied for an on-call nanny job, lied about my experience at the interview, took the necessary CPR class, and started my new line of work.
(Lying about job experience was normalized within the church and later I was explicitly told to lie and what lies to tell in order to get a job in a new state they moved me to.)
I actually loved the job and wasn’t bad at it. Kids loved me and I enjoyed getting a glimpse of other people’s lives by visiting their homes.
Shortly after, the church put me in the “kids’ room,” and I saw a whole other side of the “gospel work”—some of it quite shocking.
