50. baby shower—not!

Thomas’ mom arranged a baby shower for me at her home.

I had been told that the members of my church team would be attending. That surprised me, because usually they didn’t do “worldly” things like attend baby showers.

On the day of the baby shower, I arrived at my mother-in-law’s house feeling frazzled and guilty.

Things were busy at the church as usual, and I was taking a lot of work time out of my day to attend this baby shower, which seemed selfish. I felt like I shouldn’t be there.

We waited and waited for the church people who were supposed to come.

Finally, Thomas got a call saying that they weren’t coming after all. Of course, I thought. That’s what I expected.

Though it wasn’t surprising, sitting through the “party” without the expected guests was embarrassing to say the least.

We couldn’t explain to our parents why those who were supposed to be our friends had all flaked en masse.
